An Ode to Vermont's MTB Community

I had my palm read once. It was right after high school, and I honestly don’t really remember much of what was said except for one thing: that I was going to lead a life full of adventure. True story.

Fast forward well, a lot of years, and I’m a decade and a half into a career of riding bikes and sharing stories from many corners of the globe. There is no shortage of breathtaking places to ride bikes, but every time someone asks me where I think they should look to ride next, the same place comes to mind every single time: the Green Mountain State of Vermont.

People will ask: is the dirt really that good? It is indeed. In fact, I think it’s some of the very best dirt on the planet. They want to know if there is anything to do off of the bike. Well, only if you’re into tightly knit communities, really good food and drink, live music, tasty dairy products and maple syrup by the gallon. There will be questions about gatekeeping and locals, but as locals go they are truly are some of the best around. Are there any real mountains to ride on though? For that I have three words: the Mad River Valley. OK, that’s four words…sorry.

The Mad River Valley really is paradise along the spine of the Green Mountains. It’s a place full of swimming holes, waterfalls, big climbs and big loamy descents. There simply aren’t a whole lot of places like it on the planet.

Listen, all of this is just a long winded way for me to say thanks. I have built a life around riding bikes in the woods, and Vermont has become more than just another awesome place to ride them. It’s really a home away from home for me. The love I have for this land, these trails, and so many of these people is profound. And yes, I have been at this for quite a long while, but I’m not done just yet. There are too many trails to ride, and too many people to ride trails with. So yes, thanks for everything…thus far. Thanks in advance…for what’s to come.

Yours truly,

A Wannabe Vermonter
