When it comes to your handlebar, stiffer isn’t always better. For the best ride quality, your handlebar needs to provide both comfort and control, while your stem needs to provide stiffness and precision. The Phoenix Team oversize 35mm cockpit is designed to work as a complete system that maximizes stiffness and control where it benefits the rider most while at the same time, providing the perfect amount of shock absorption and vibration damping for your hands and upper body. Our new Phoenix Enduro/Trail and XC/Trail stems provide the ultimate connection between your bar and fork while our new 35mm carbon bar features our own tuned ride design, providing an ultra-stiff center section for the stem clamp interface.

How do I cut my Phoenix PadLoc bars?

Park Tools makes an adjustable cutting tool called the SG-7.2 and a PadLoc cutting insert called SG1-7. The SG1-7 saw guide insert fits inside the adjustable cutting tool to make the process fairly simple. Most shops should have this cutting tool available. WTB will have a simple home version of a cutting tool available in the near future. The Phoenix bar has clear angle markings on the bar to line up with the opening on the cutting guides so that you can match the angle correctly on each side of the bar. We have chosen the angle that we feel offers the highest levels of comfort and control but we provide a cutting range of 30 degrees in each direction so that you can customize to your personal preference. When shortening a bar, you would just cut the bar to your preferred length just as with any standard handlebar and then the PadLoc angle cut is performed as a secondary step. What is the overall length of the Phoenix bars with the PadLoc grips installed?

The Phoenix PadLoc grips add approximately 15mm to the overall bar width so a 740mm bar will measure 755mm overall to the ends of the grips. The 760mm bar will measure 775mm and the 800mm bar will measure 815mm to the outsides of the grips. Please keep this in mind when ordering your bar as we often hear from riders who like to run in-between sizes like 750mm and 780mm. If this is you, then you might be able to order the bar size slightly shorter then what you were looking for and still achieve a similar end result without having to cut your bars.

Can I run a non-PadLoc grip with my Phoenix bars?

You can potentially run a non-PadLoc grip with Phoenix bars. One option is to order your Phoenix bars in a size longer then preferred and then cut off the Padloc section. You would need to cut the bars down by 25mm on each side (50mm total) to remove the PadLoc angle and then the bar can be run with any standard grip on the market. In the near future, WTB will offer a plug that fills the PadLoc angle that will enable any standard grip to be used without modifying the overall length of the bar.
